Thank you so much for the article. Very Informative… I am planning a budget trip to Maldives and hope to follow your plan A. I have some questions like —

What are the timings of public ferry from each islands ?
What is the distance of local islands from Male ?
And which local island will be the nearest to airport ?
Is it always necessary to reach Male to travel to local islands or we can visit local islands from other local islands? If Yes what are the timings?

Will follow this itinerary , just wanted to ask if you know some travel agency or tour agencies for day tours on some luxury resort with speedboat transfers / breakfast /lunch we can book with?. Its my birthday on 9th of Aug. and will celebrate here,I will travel alone :'( but its okay :D will be arriving there the night of Aug.5.

My patner and I visited 2 islands in Maldives (Gulhi and Maafushi) on low season and I would say it’s the best decision we had. Not only we we’re able to have free watersport rides and equipments. We also stayed in a 3 star hotel (in Gulhi). We did package activities such as island hopping, snorkeling and visiting sandbanks. The most memorable one was trying the flyboarding. Our total costs on the trip excluding the plane ticket is 24,000 php only!

Hi Shimpu,

Yes, there are resorts that you can visit on a day tour. Filalholi Resort is one of the most common.

There are public boats that you can take from one public island to another. If you’re going to a private island, you can arrange a tour or charter a private boat.

USD in private islands, local currency in public islands (although USD is sometimes accepted too).

Hi Yoshke… Thanks for the amazing article. Now I can plan for a budget stay in Maldives. I am planning for the first Itinerary you mentioned. You are a Masiha for poor travellers like me.
I need some more info like whether we can go for resorts and have some pics in water villas and which will be the best one in terms of less expensive? Also about ferries how can I go to and fro between Islands? Do I need local currency or USD? How to plan for snorkelling or scuba dive?

It will be most helpful if you can prepare an itinerary along with timings(5 days).

Hi Rose, you’re referring to local public ferries, right? As far as I know, they’re not that common. Usually, just one trip in a day and they’re NOT available every day of the week. We failed to get the schedules though. Some travelers choose to form a group and charter a private transfer though.
